WhenRedditchwasdesignatedaNewTownin1963athadaroadsystemwhichhadhardlychangedintheprevious100years.Betweenthe1950'sand1960's,carownershipintheUKhadtripledandtheroadnetworkinRedditchhadnotkeptupwiththislevelofincreaseandhadbecomeseriouslyoverloaded.AtpeaktimestheTownCentrewashopelesslycongestedandtherewasaseriousneedtomovetheA441routeawayfromthecentreofthetownandtheroutealongEveshamStreet/Road

TheNewTownMasterPlanproposedremovingthroughtrafficawayfromthetowncentre.Inparticular,theA441wouldbypassthecentralareaofthetownleavingtheoldroutenorthofthecentreandrejoiningfurthersouth.TheroadsweredesignedtolinkwiththeproposedimprovedA435whichincludedtheWythallbypass.Thesemainrouteswouldhavelocaldistributorroadswhichwouldprovideaccesstothenewhousingandindustrialareas.

WhentheDevelopmentCorporationcametotheendofitslifein1983,theRedditchroadsystemhadchangeddramatically.ThenewroadsystemwasdesignedtotakeRedditchtotheendofthecentury.TrafficvolumeintheUKwasstillincreasingandhadagaindoubledbetweenthe1960'sand1980's.However,thenewroadsystemwasdesignedtocopewiththisandthetrafficremainedfreeflowingwithveryfewrushhourtrafficjams.

Whenthedevelopmentofthenewroadsystembegan,therewasajokeinthetownthattheDevelopmentCorporationwasbuildingadualcarriagewayforeachresident.However,thiswasplannedinthe1960'stolastatleasttotheendofthe20thCenturyandforapopulationrisingto100,000.Thishasbeenachievedand,eventenyearsintothe21stCentury,theroadsystemisstill‘fitforpurpose’andallowsforfurtherexpansionofthetown.Thisillustratestheforesightandandadvancedplanningofthemuchmalignedbut,nevertheless,effective,DevelopmentCorporation.

TheresultofthenewroadsdevelopedbytheDevelopmentCorporation,whichweredesignedtolinkwiththeMotorwayNetworkensuresthatRedditchhasanenviablelocation.TheGoogle®map,totheright,showstheextentofthisforesight.TheBromsgroveHighway,A448,isadualcarriagewayroadtotheBromsgrovebypass.ThisgivesdirectlinkstotheM5NorthandSouth.ThisprovidesroutestotheSouth-WestandtheNorth-WestandWales.North,alongtheA441quicklybecomesadualcarriagewaywhichjoinstheM42.ThisallowsdirecthighspeedcontacttotheM40toLondonandtheM6totheNorth-East.ItalsogiveafastroutetoBirminghamInternationalAirportandRailwayStation.TravellingSouthalongtheA435proceedsalongtheAlcesterbypass(dual-carriageway)andviamajorroadstoeitherEveshamandStratfordandallpointsSouth.
